A cell of EMF and internal resistance is connected to two external resistances and and a perfect ammeter. The current is measured in four cases:
(i) no external resistance;
(ii) with only;
(iii) with and in series;
(iv) with and in parallel. The four readings are and (not in order). Identify the current in each case.

Answer: (i) \;
(ii) \;
(iii) \;
(iv) .

Solution

Current is largest when the resistance is least and smallest when it is greatest. (i) Only the cell: least resistance largest current . (iii) in series: greatest resistance smallest current . (iv) is smaller than either alone but larger than zero . (ii) only lies between (iv) and (iii) .
