Laminated iron sheets are used to minimize ______ currents in the core of a transformer.

Answer: Eddy currents.

Solution

A changing flux in the core induces circulating (eddy) currents that heat the core and waste energy. Laminating the core with thin, insulated iron sheets breaks up these current paths and so minimizes eddy currents.
