(a) With a suitable ray diagram, derive the mirror formula f1=v1+u1 for a spherical mirror. (b) A plano-convex lens of radius of curvature 20cm is made of glass of refractive index 1.5. According to the lens maker's formula, find its focal length, and if an object is placed 30cm in front of the lens, find the nature and position of the image formed.
Solution
(a) From similar triangles in the mirror ray diagram (△ABP∼△A′B′P and △A′B′F∼△MNP) with the sign convention (PB=−u, PB′=v, PF=−f):
f1=v1+u1
(b) Plano-convex (R=20cm, other face flat): f1=Rμ−1=200.5⇒f=+40cm. Object u=−30cm: v1=f1+u1=401−301=−1201⇒v=−12cm (virtual, erect).
f=+40cm,v=−12cm(virtual image, 12cm in front of the lens)
