How does a fuel cell operate?

Answer: It converts the chemical energy of a fuel (and oxidant), supplied continuously, directly into electrical energy.

Solution

In a fuel cell the fuel (e.g. H, CH) and the oxidant (O) are fed continuously to the electrodes, where they react electrochemically.
The chemical energy of combustion of the fuel is thus converted directly into electrical energy.
