Give an example of a pseudo first order reaction.

Answer: Acid-catalysed hydrolysis of an ester (or inversion of cane sugar) in dilute aqueous solution.

Solution

Acid hydrolysis of ethyl acetate:

Water is in such large excess that its concentration is effectively constant, so the reaction is first order in the ester. (Inversion of cane sugar is another example.)
