What are transition elements? Write two characteristics of the transition elements.

Solution

Transition elements are those whose atoms, or simple ions, have incompletely filled (n−1)d orbitals — the d-block elements of groups 3–12 (Zn, Cd, Hg, with d throughout, are excluded from the strict definition).
Two characteristics (any two):
  1. They exhibit variable oxidation states.
  2. They form coloured ions and numerous complex compounds.
(Also acceptable: paramagnetism, catalytic activity, alloy and interstitial-compound formation, high melting points.)
