Write the IUPAC name of the complex [Pt(en)Cl]. Draw the structures of the geometrical isomers of this complex.

Solution

Charge balance: x + 0 + 2(−1) = 0 ⇒ Pt is +2; two bidentate en + two Cl give C.N. 6 (octahedral).
Name: \textbf{dichloridobis(ethane-1,2-diamine)platinum(II)}.
Geometrical isomers:
\textit{cis}: the two Cl occupy adjacent (90°) positions, the two en chelate rings spanning the remaining cis pairs — this isomer is also optically active.
\textit{trans}: the two Cl occupy opposite (180°) apices with the two en rings in the equatorial plane.
