Given below are two statements :

Statement I : Stopping potential in photoelectric effect does not depend on the power of the light source.

Statement II : For a given metal, the maximum kinetic energy of the photoelectron depends on the wavelength of the incident light.

In the light of above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.
  1. (A)Statement I is incorrect but statement II is correct
  2. (B)Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  3. (C)Statement I is correct but statement II is incorrect
  4. (D)Both statement I and statement II are correct✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

The stopping potential measures the greatest kinetic energy of the emitted electrons through , a quantity set by the wavelength of the light and the metal alone; raising the power only sends more photons and frees more electrons without lifting this ceiling, so the first statement holds. The same relation shows the maximum kinetic energy rising as the wavelength shortens, so the second statement holds too. Both statements are correct.
