As shown in figures, three identical polaroids P1, P2 and P3 are placed one after another. The pass axis of P2 and P3 are inclined at angle of 60∘ and 90∘ with respect to axis of P1. The source S has an intensity of 256m2W. The intensity of light at point O is ______m2W.
Answer: 24
Solution
Unpolarised light loses half its intensity through the first polaroid, so after P1 the intensity is 2256=128 W m−2. P2 is at 60∘ to P1, so by Malus's law 128cos260∘=32 W m−2. P3 is at 90∘ to P1, hence 30∘ from P2, giving 32cos230∘. The intensity reaching O is 24 W m−2.
