As shown in the figure, a point charge Q is placed at the centre of conducting spherical shell of inner radius a and outer radius b. The electric field due to charge Q in three different regions I, II and III is given by : (I : r<a, II : a<r<b, III : r>b)
(A)EI=0,EII=0,EIII=0
(B)EI=0,EII=0,EIII=0✓ Correct
(C)EI=0,EII=0,EIII=0
(D)EI=0,EII=0,EIII=0
Answer: (B)
Solution
The central charge Q sets up a radial field in region I (r<a), E=r2kQ=0. Within the metal of the shell, region II (a<r<b), the electrostatic field must vanish, so E=0 there, the inner surface drawing an induced charge −Q and the outer surface +Q. Outside the shell, region III (r>b), the total enclosed charge is again Q, giving E=r2kQ=0. The field is therefore non-zero in region I, zero in region II, and non-zero in region III.
