Two objects A and B are placed at 15 cm and 25 cm from the pole in front of a concave mirror having radius of curvature 40 cm. The distance between images formed by the mirror is:
(A)40 cm
(B)60 cm
(C)160 cm✓ Correct
(D)100 cm
Answer: (C)
Solution
The focal length of the concave mirror is f=2R=20 cm, taken as f=−20 cm. For the object at u=−15 cm, v1=f1−u1=−201+151=601, so v=+60 cm, a virtual image 60 cm behind the mirror since the object lies inside the focus. For the object at u=−25 cm, v1=−201+251=−1001, so v=−100 cm, a real image 100 cm in front of the mirror. With one image 60 cm behind the pole and the other 100 cm in front, the separation between the two images is 60+100=160 cm.
