Moment of inertia of a disc of mass M and radius 'R' about any of its diameter is 4MR2. The moment of inertia of this disc about an axis normal to the disc and passing through a point on its edge will be, 2xMR2. The value of x is ______.
Answer: 3
Solution
The moment of inertia about a diameter is 4MR2. By the perpendicular axis theorem the moment of inertia about the central axis normal to the disc equals the sum of the two equal diameter values, IC=2×4MR2=2MR2. Shifting to a parallel axis through a point on the edge, a distance R away, the parallel axis theorem gives I=IC+MR2=2MR2+MR2=23MR2. Comparing with 2xMR2, the value of x is 3.
