In which of the following reactions the hydrogen peroxide acts as a reducing agent?
(A)PbS+4H2O2→PbSO4+4H2O
(B)2Fe2++H2O2→2Fe3++2OH−
(C)HOCl+H2O2→H3O++Cl−+O2✓ Correct
(D)Mn2++H2O2→Mn4++2OH−
Answer: (C)
Solution
Hydrogen peroxide behaves as a reducing agent when its oxygen, at oxidation state −1, is raised to 0 in O2. In the reaction HOCl+H2O2→H3O++Cl−+O2 the peroxide oxygen is oxidised to dioxygen while the chlorine of HOCl falls from +1 to −1. Because the peroxide supplies the electrons that reduce chlorine, here it functions as the reducing agent.
