The metal which is extracted by oxidation and subsequent reduction from its ore is :
  1. (A)Al
  2. (B)Ag✓ Correct
  3. (C)Cu
  4. (D)Fe

Answer: (B)

Solution

Silver is won from its ore by first bringing the metal into solution and then recovering it, a sequence of oxidation followed by reduction. Treating the ore with dilute sodium cyanide in the presence of air oxidises silver into the soluble complex , and adding zinc then reduces that complex back to free silver. This oxidation-then-reduction route picks out silver.
