Find out the major products from the following reactions.
(A)(see structure)✓ Correct
(B)(see structure)
(C)(see structure)
(D)A = (see structure), B = (see structure)
Answer: (A)
Solution
The alkene is 2-methylbut-1-ene. With borane followed by alkaline hydrogen peroxide, boron adds to the terminal, less substituted carbon and the hydroxyl ends up there after oxidation, giving the primary alcohol 2-methylbutan-1-ol as product A. Oxymercuration with mercuric acetate and water followed by sodium borohydride instead places the hydroxyl on the more substituted carbon in Markovnikov fashion, giving the tertiary alcohol 2-methylbutan-2-ol as product B. The set showing the primary alcohol for A and the tertiary alcohol for B is the correct one.
