The variation of the rate of an enzyme catalyzed reaction with substrate concentration is correctly represented by graph

Structure b

Structure c

Structure d

  1. (A)b
  2. (B)c✓ Correct
  3. (C)d
  4. (D)a

Answer: (B)

Solution

An enzyme-catalysed reaction follows saturation kinetics. While substrate is scarce nearly every enzyme molecule is free, and the rate climbs almost in proportion to substrate concentration. As the concentration rises the active sites fill up, and once essentially all the enzyme is engaged the rate can grow no further and flattens to a maximum. The correct variation is a curve that rises steeply at low substrate concentration and then bends over to a horizontal plateau.
