Some reactions of NO2 relevant to photochemical smog formation are
Identify A,B,X and Y
(A)X=[O],Y=NO,A=O2,B=O3✓ Correct
(B)X=N2O,Y=[O],A=O3,B=NO
(C)X=21O2,Y=NO2,A=O3,B=O2
(D)X=NO,Y=[O],A=O2,B=N2O3
Answer: (A)
Solution
Nitrogen dioxide is the chief light absorber in photochemical smog, and the absorbed sunlight splits it into nitric oxide and a reactive oxygen atom, so the two fragments are atomic oxygen and nitric oxide. The oxygen atom then combines with molecular oxygen of the air to build up ozone. Thus the photolysis gives atomic oxygen together with nitric oxide, and the oxygen atom reacting with molecular oxygen produces ozone.
