Butylated hydroxyanisole is an antioxidant, and when mixed with butter it shields the fat from aerial oxidation and so lengthens its shelf life, making the assertion correct. It achieves this because it is more readily oxidised than the fat itself, intercepting oxygen and the radicals that would otherwise attack the food, so the reason is correct and is exactly why the shelf life improves. Both the assertion and the reason are correct and the reason correctly explains the assertion.
