Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R
Assertion A :- Carbon forms two important oxides -CO and . CO is neutral whereas is acidic in nature.
Reason R:- can combine with water in a limited way to form carbonic acid, while CO is sparingly soluble in water.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :-

Reason R:- can combine with water in a limited way to form carbonic acid, while CO is sparingly soluble in water.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :-
- (A)Both A and R are correct but R is NOT the correct explanation of A .
- (B)Both A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation of A .✓ Correct
- (C)A is not correct but R is correct.
- (D)A is correct but R is not correct.
Answer: (B)
Solution
Carbon monoxide neither reacts with water to give an acid nor turns litmus, so it is neutral, whereas carbon dioxide dissolves to a limited extent to form carbonic acid and is therefore acidic, which makes the assertion correct. The reason, that carbon dioxide combines with water to a small degree to give carbonic acid while carbon monoxide is only sparingly soluble, is itself correct and is precisely why the two oxides differ in acidic character. Both statements are correct and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.
