The alkaline earth metal sulphate(s) which are readily soluble in water is/are:
(A)
(B)
(C)
(D)
(E)
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
(A)
(B)
(C)
(D)
(E)
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
- (A)A only
- (B)B only
- (C)A and B✓ Correct
- (D)B and C
Answer: (C)
Solution
The solubility of the alkaline earth sulphates falls steadily down the group, because the lattice energy stays almost constant while the hydration energy drops sharply as the cation grows. For the small and ions the large hydration energy outweighs the lattice energy, so beryllium sulphate and magnesium sulphate dissolve readily. Calcium sulphate is only sparingly soluble, while strontium and barium sulphates are virtually insoluble. The readily soluble sulphates are those of beryllium and magnesium.
