The graph which represents the following reaction is : (C6H5)3C−ClOH− Pyridine (C6H5)3C−OH
(A)(see structure)
(B)(see structure)
(C)(see structure)✓ Correct
(D)(see structure)
Answer: (C)
Solution
Triphenylmethyl chloride ionises readily because the carbocation formed is stabilised by three phenyl rings, so its conversion to the alcohol follows an SN1 path. The slow, rate-determining step is the unimolecular ionisation of the carbon–chlorine bond, which makes the rate first order in the substrate and independent of the hydroxide concentration. A plot of rate against the concentration of triphenylmethyl chloride is therefore a straight line through the origin, rising in direct proportion to that concentration.
