Which one of the following statements is incorrect?
- (A)Boron and Indium can be purified by zone refining method.
- (B)Van- Arkel method is used to purify tungsten.✓ Correct
- (C)Cast iron is obtained by melting pig iron with scrap iron and coke using hot air blast.
- (D)The malleable iron is prepared from cast iron by oxidising impurities in a reverberatory furnace.
Answer: (B)
Solution
Zone refining purifies elements of the semiconductor type such as boron, indium, germanium and silicon, so that statement stands. Cast iron is indeed obtained by remelting pig iron with scrap iron and coke under a hot-air blast, and malleable iron is made from cast iron by oxidising away its impurities in a reverberatory furnace, so both of these stand too. The van Arkel method, however, purifies titanium, zirconium and boron through their volatile iodides, whereas tungsten is obtained by hydrogen reduction of its oxide. The statement that is not correct is the claim that the van Arkel method is used to purify tungsten.
