In the following reaction

The % yield for reaction I is 60% and that of reaction II is . The overall yield of the complete reaction is __ % [nearest integer]

Answer: 30

Solution

For consecutive reactions, the overall yield is the product of individual yields.

Starting with n moles of reactant:
  • After reaction I (60% yield): moles obtained = 0.6n
  • After reaction II (50% yield on 0.6n): moles obtained = 0.6n × 0.5 = 0.3n

Overall yield =

Alternatively, overall yield = 60% × 50% = 0.6 × 0.5 = 0.3 = 30%.
