A system to 10 balls each of mass 2 kg are connected via massless and unstretchable string. The system is allowed to slip over the edge of a smooth table as shown in figure. Tension on the string between the

Solution

When the 6th ball just leaves the table, 6 balls hang vertically. The acceleration of the system is

a = \frac{6 m g}{10 m} = \frac{3 g}{5}

. For the tension between the 7th and 8th balls, consider balls 8, 9, and 10 together (3 balls hanging). The tension must support their weight minus provide their acceleration:

T = 3 m \times a = 3 \times 2 \times \frac{3 \times 10}{5} = 36
