Solution

The horizontal component of Earth's magnetic field is related to the total field by:

B_{H} = B cos θ

where

is the angle of dip. Solving for

B = \frac{B _{H}}{c o s θ} = \frac{0.5}{c o s 3 0 ^{\circ}} = \frac{0.5}{3 /2} = \frac{1}{3}
