The elastic behaviour of material for linear stress and linear strain, is shown in the figure. The energy density for a linear strain of 5×10−4 is ____ kJ/m³. Assume that material is elastic upto the linear strain of 5×10−4.
Answer: 25
Solution
The energy stored per unit volume in an elastically strained material is the area under its stress-strain line, which in the linear region is u=21×stress×strain. From the graph the stress at the strain 5×10−4 is 1×108Pa, so u=21×(1×108)×(5×10−4)=2.5×104Jm−3, which is 25kJm−3.
