A system of two blocks of masses m=2kg and M=8kg is placed on a smooth table as shown in figure. The coefficient of static friction between two blocks is 0.5. The maximum horizontal force F that can be applied to the block of mass M so that the blocks move together will be :
(A)9.8 N
(B)39.2 N
(C)49 N✓ Correct
(D)78.4 N
Answer: (C)
Solution
The upper block is carried along only by the friction the lower block exerts on it, so the greatest acceleration the pair can share before that block slips is set by its limiting friction, μsmg=mamax, which gives amax=μsg=0.5×9.8=4.9ms−2 independent of the upper mass. As long as the whole system accelerates at this value or less the blocks stay together, and since the table is smooth the applied force simply accelerates the combined mass, Fmax=(m+M)amax=(2+8)×4.9=49N.
