The reaction shows a Wurtz-Fittig coupling where an aryl halide reacts with an alkyl halide in the presence of sodium metal to form an alkyl-substituted benzene. For the product shown (toluene or methylbenzene), compound A must be bromobenzene (CX6HX5Br), which couples with methyl bromide (CHX3Br) in the presence of sodium to give the methylated aromatic product. Benzyl bromide would give a different product (diphenylethane), and cyclohexyl bromide would not undergo this coupling effectively.
