The solid cylinder of length 80 cm and mass M has a radius of 20 cm . Calculate the density of the material used if the moment of inertia of the cylinder about an axis CD parallel to AB as shown in figure is 2.7kgm2.
(A)7.5×101kg/m3
(B)1.49×102kg/m3✓ Correct
(C)14.9kg/m3
(D)7.5×102kg/m3
Answer: (B)
Solution
The axis CD is parallel to the cylinder's own axis AB and lies a perpendicular distance 2L from it, so the parallel-axis theorem gives
ICD=21MR2+M(2L)2
With R=0.2 m and L=0.8 m,
2.7=M[2(0.2)2+(0.4)2]=M(0.02+0.16)=0.18M
so M=15 kg. The volume of the cylinder is πR2L=π(0.2)2(0.8)=0.1005m3, and the density is
ρ=0.100515=1.49×102kgm−3
