Curved surfaces of a plano-convex lens of refractive index μ1 and a planoconcave lens of refractive index μ2 have equal radius of curvature as shown in figure. Find the ratio of radius of curvature to the focal length of the combined lenses.
(A)μ2−μ11
(B)μ2−μ1
(C)μ1−μ21
(D)μ1−μ2✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Each surface contributes through the lens-maker's formula. The plano-convex part of index μ1 has a flat face and a convex face of radius R, giving f11=Rμ1−1. The plano-concave part of index μ2 shares that curved interface (radius R, opposite curvature) and a flat outer face, giving f21=−Rμ2−1. In contact the powers add:
f1=f11+f21=R(μ1−1)−(μ2−1)=Rμ1−μ2.
Therefore fR=μ1−μ2.
