Given below are two statements:
Statement I: An allotrope of oxygen is an important intermediate in the formation of reducing smog.
Statement II: Gases such as oxides of nitrogen and sulphur present in troposphere contribute to the formation of photochemical smog.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Statement I: An allotrope of oxygen is an important intermediate in the formation of reducing smog.
Statement II: Gases such as oxides of nitrogen and sulphur present in troposphere contribute to the formation of photochemical smog.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:
- (A)Both Statement I and Statement II are false✓ Correct
- (B)Statement I is false but Statement II is true
- (C)Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- (D)Both Statement I and Statement II are true
Answer: (A)
Solution
Reducing, or classical, smog forms in cool humid air and its chemistry is that of sulfur dioxide and soot; the allotrope of oxygen meant in the first statement, ozone, is the central intermediate of photochemical smog instead, so the first statement is false. Photochemical smog forms in warm dry sunlight from oxides of nitrogen together with unburnt hydrocarbons, while oxides of sulfur belong to reducing smog, so naming nitrogen and sulfur oxides together as its source makes the second statement false too. Both statements are false.
