The motion of a mass on a spring, with spring constant K is as shown in figure. The equation of motion is given by x(t)=Asinωt+Bcosωt with ω=mK. Suppose that at time t=0, the position of mass is x(0) and velocity v(0), then its displacement can also be represented as x(t)=Ccos(ωt−ϕ), where C and ϕ are :
(A)C=ω2v(0)2+x(0)2,ϕ=tan−1(v(0)x(0)ω)
(B)C=ω22v(0)2+x(0)2,ϕ=tan−1(2v(0)x(0)ω)
(C)C=ω2v(0)2+x(0)2,ϕ=tan−1(x(0)ωv(0))✓ Correct
(D)C=ω22v(0)2+x(0)2,ϕ=tan−1(x(0)ωv(0))
Answer: (C)
Solution
Expanding the second form, Ccos(ωt−ϕ)=Ccosϕcosωt+Csinϕsinωt, so comparison with x(t)=Asinωt+Bcosωt gives A=Csinϕ and B=Ccosϕ. At t=0 the position is x(0)=B=Ccosϕ, and differentiating gives v(0)=Aω=ωCsinϕ. Squaring and adding the two relations,
x(0)2+ω2v(0)2=C2
and dividing them,
tanϕ=ωx(0)v(0)
So C=ω2v(0)2+x(0)2 and ϕ=tan−1(x(0)ωv(0)).
