As shown in the figure, a block of mass 3kg is kept on a horizontal rough surface of coefficient of friction 331. The critical force to be applied on the vertical surface as shown at an angle 60∘ with horizontal such that it does not move, will be 3x. The value of x will be ____ [g=10m/s2;sin60∘=23;cos60∘=21]
Answer: 3
Solution
The applied force F pushes the block downward and to the left at 60∘ to the horizontal, so its vertical component presses the block into the surface.
Horizontal equilibrium at the critical (about-to-slide) condition, friction is limiting: Fcos60∘=μN
2F=331(103+23F)
2F=33103+2⋅333F=310+6F
2F−6F=310⇒63F−F=310⇒3F=310
F=10 N
Given F=3x: x=310=3.33≈3 (rounded to the nearest integer)
Note on the physics: increasing F raises the driving component Fcos60∘=F/2 but also raises the friction limit, through μFsin60∘=F/6. Sliding is possible only because cos60∘>μsin60∘, i.e. μ<cot60∘=0.577. Here μ=331≈0.192, so a finite critical force exists. For μ≥cot60∘ the block could never be pushed, no matter how large F is.
