Identify correct A, B and C in the reaction sequence given below :
(A)(see structures)A
(B)(see structures)AB✓ Correct
(C)(see structures)
(D)(see structures)ABC
Answer: (B)
Solution
Nitration of benzene with concentrated HNO3 and H2SO4 gives nitrobenzene (A). The nitro group is a meta-director, so chlorination with Cl2 and anhydrous AlCl3 gives m-chloronitrobenzene (B). Reduction with Fe/HCl converts the nitro group to an amino group, giving m-chloroaniline (C). So A is nitrobenzene, B is m-chloronitrobenzene and C is m-chloroaniline.
