The structures of A and B formed in the following reaction are : [Ph = -C₆H₅]
(see structure)
(A)(see structures)
(B)(see structures)AB
(C)(see structures)AB✓ Correct
(D)(see structures)
Answer: (C)
Solution
Benzene undergoes Friedel-Crafts acylation with succinic anhydride and anhydrous AlCl3: the anhydride acylates the ring while its second carbonyl opens to a carboxylic acid, giving 4-oxo-4-phenylbutanoic acid, Ph−CO−CH2−CH2−COOH. Clemmensen reduction with Zn(Hg)/HCl reduces the ketone carbonyl to a methylene group, giving 4-phenylbutanoic acid, Ph−CH2−CH2−CH2−COOH. So A is 4-oxo-4-phenylbutanoic acid and B is 4-phenylbutanoic acid.
