Which of the following is correct structure of tyrosine?
  1. (A)(see structure)
  2. (B)(see structure)
  3. (C)(see structure)
    ✓ Correct
  4. (D)(see structure)

Answer: (C)

Solution

Tyrosine is the para-hydroxy derivative of phenylalanine. Its -carbon carries the amino group, the carboxyl group and a hydrogen, and the side chain is a single methylene group joining that carbon to a benzene ring. The ring bears one hydroxyl group at the position directly opposite the point of attachment. The structure of tyrosine is with the hydroxyl group para to the link.
