With respect to drug-enzyme interaction, identify the wrong statement.
  1. (A)Competitive inhibitor binds to the enzyme's active site
  2. (B)Allosteric inhibitor changes the enzyme's active site
  3. (C)Non- Competitive inhibitor binds to the allosteric site
  4. (D)Allosteric inhibitor competes with the enzyme's active site✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

A competitive inhibitor resembles the substrate closely enough to occupy the active site itself, so it competes with the substrate for that site. A non-competitive inhibitor binds instead at a separate allosteric site, and that binding changes the shape of the protein so that the active site no longer fits the substrate. Since an allosteric inhibitor never occupies the active site, it does not compete with the substrate for it. The wrong statement is that an allosteric inhibitor competes with the enzyme's active site.
