In the above reaction, 3.9 g of benzene on nitration gives 4.92 g of nitrobenzene. The percentage yield of nitrobenzene in the above reaction is ______ % (Round off to the nearest integer). (Given atomic mass : C: 12.0u, H:1.0u, O:16.0u, N:14.0u)
Answer: 80
Solution
Nitration replaces one ring hydrogen of benzene by a nitro group, so at best one mole of benzene yields one mole of nitrobenzene. Benzene has molar mass 78 g mol−1 and nitrobenzene 123 g mol−1, so 3.9 g of benzene is 0.05 mol and a complete conversion would give 0.05×123=6.15 g of nitrobenzene. The mass obtained is 4.92 g, so
yield=6.154.92×100
and the percentage yield of nitrobenzene is 80%.
