Deficiency of vitamin K causes:
- (A)Cheilosis
- (B)Increase in blood clotting time✓ Correct
- (C)Decrease in blood clotting time
- (D)Increase in fragility of RBC's
Answer: (B)
Solution
Vitamin K is the cofactor for the carboxylation reaction in the liver that converts prothrombin and factors VII, IX and X into their active forms. Without it these clotting factors remain inactive, the clotting cascade runs slowly and bleeding continues longer than it should. Deficiency of vitamin K causes an increase in blood clotting time.
