A loop of flexible wire of irregular shape carrying current is placed in an external magnetic field . Identify the effect of the field on the wire.
- (A)Wire gets stretched to become straight.
- (B)Loop assumes circular shape with its plane parallel to the field .
- (C)Shape of the loop remains unchanged .
- (D)Loop assumes circular shape with its plane normal to the field .✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
The torque on a current loop turns it until its magnetic moment points along , and is perpendicular to the plane of the loop, so the plane settles normal to the field. In that orientation the force on every element of the wire points radially outward, so the flexible wire is pushed out until it encloses the largest area its fixed perimeter allows. That shape is a circle. The loop therefore takes a circular shape with its plane normal to the field.
