Consider the following reactions, which of these reaction(s) will not produce Saytzeff product?

Which of these reaction(s) will not produce Saytzeff product?
  1. (A)(b) and (d)
  2. (B)(c) only✓ Correct
  3. (C)(a), (c) and (d)
  4. (D)(d) only

Answer: (B)

Solution

The Saytzeff product is the more substituted, more stable alkene, which is the normal outcome of elimination; only a bulky base steers the reaction towards the less substituted Hofmann alkene. Scanning the given reactions, a bulky base is used in reaction (c) alone, so that is the only one that fails to give the Saytzeff product.
