The major products A and B in the following reactions are :
(A)(see structures)AB
(B)(see structures)AB
(C)(see structures)AB✓ Correct
(D)(see structures)AB
Answer: (C)
Solution
In the first sequence the Grignard reagent CH3MgBr adds across the nitrile carbon, and acidic hydrolysis with H3O+ then turns the intermediate into a ketone, product A. In the second, lithium aluminium hydride reduces the nitrile all the way to a primary amine, product B. The products are therefore the ketone and the primary amine.
