The number of chiral carbons present in sucrose is ____ .

Answer: 9

Solution

Sucrose is glucose joined to fructose through their anomeric carbons. Counting the carbons that bear four different groups, the glucose unit contributes four such stereocentres and the fructose unit five, so sucrose has chiral carbons in all.
