In the figure below, P and Q are two equally intense coherent sources emitting radiation of wavelength 20 m. The separation between P and Q is 5 m and the phase of P is ahead of that of Q by 90∘. A, B and C are three distinct points of observation, each equidistant from the midpoint of PQ. The intensities of radiation at A, B, C will be in the ratio:
(A)0:1:4
(B)2:1:0✓ Correct
(C)0:1:2
(D)4:1:0
Answer: (B)
Solution
The two sources are coherent with P leading Q by a fixed phase of 2π, and the extra phase from a path difference Δ is λ2πΔ with λ=20m. At the point where Q is nearer by Δ=25m, the path contributes 202π⋅25=2π that cancels the source lead, giving zero net phase and maximum intensity 4I0. At the point equidistant from both sources only the 2π source lead survives, so the intensity is 2I0(1+cos2π)=2I0. At the point where P is nearer, the path phase adds to the source lead to make π, giving complete cancellation and zero intensity. The three intensities are in the ratio 4I0:2I0:0=2:1:0.
