Four point masses, each of mass m, are fixed at the corners of a square of side l. The square is rotating with angular frequency ω, about an axis passing through one of the corners of the square and parallel to its diagonal, as shown in the figure. The angular momentum of the square about this axis is:
(A)ml2ω
(B)5ml2ω
(C)3ml2ω✓ Correct
(D)2ml2ω
Answer: (C)
Solution
Take the axis through one corner and parallel to the diagonal that does not pass through that corner. The mass sitting on the axis contributes nothing. The two masses adjacent to it lie at a perpendicular distance 2l from the axis, so each contributes m(2l)2=2ml2. The mass at the far corner is at a perpendicular distance 2l, contributing m(2l)2=2ml2. The moment of inertia about the axis is therefore I=2×2ml2+2ml2=3ml2, and the angular momentum is L=Iω=3ml2ω.
