Let AD and BC be two vertical poles at A and b respectively on a horizontal ground. If AD=8m,BC=11m and AB=10m; then the distance (in meters) of a point M on AB from the point A such that MD2+MC2 is minimum is ______.
Answer: 5
Solution
Let AM=x, so MB=10−x. The poles are vertical, so MD2=x2+AD2=x2+64 and MC2=(10−x)2+BC2=(10−x)2+121. Adding, MD2+MC2=x2+(10−x)2+185=2x2−20x+285=2(x−5)2+235, which is least when x=5. The point M therefore lies 5m from A.
