Two vertical poles of heights, 20 m and 80 m stand apart on a horizontal plane. The height (in meters) of the point of intersection of the lines joining the top of each pole to the foot of the other, from this horizontal plane is:
(A)18
(B)12
(C)16✓ Correct
(D)15
Answer: (C)
Solution
Let the poles stand a distance x apart and let the crossing point be at height h. By similar triangles, the line from the top of the 20m pole to the foot of the other gives 20h=xy, where y is the horizontal distance from the 20m pole, and the line from the top of the 80m pole to the foot of the first gives 80h=xx−y. Adding these, 20h+80h=xy+xx−y=1, so h⋅804+1=1 and h=16m. A neat feature is that this height does not depend on how far apart the poles are.
