The major product(s) obtained in the following reaction is/ are:
  1. (A)(see structure)
    ✓ Correct
  2. (B)(see structure)
  3. (C)(see structure)
  4. (D)(see structure)

Answer: (A)

Solution

Ozone attacks the carbon-carbon double bond of the cyclic alkene, and the reductive work-up splits the resulting ozonide into carbonyl groups. Because the double bond is inside a ring, cleaving it opens the ring rather than making two separate molecules, leaving a single open-chain compound bearing a carbonyl at each cut end, that is a dialdehyde of the form .
