Number of stereo centers present in linear and cyclic structures of glucose are respectively
  1. (A)4 & 5✓ Correct
  2. (B)5 & 5
  3. (C)4 & 4
  4. (D)5 & 4

Answer: (A)

Solution

Count the stereocentres in each form. In open-chain D-glucose the carbonyl carbon is flat and achiral, leaving , , and as the four stereocentres. When the chain closes into the pyranose ring, becomes the anomeric carbon bonded to four different groups and turns into a new stereocentre, so the cyclic form carries five. The two counts are therefore four in the linear form and five in the cyclic form.
