A transparent cube of side d , made of a material of refractive index μ2, is immersed in a liquid of refractive index μ1(μ1<μ2). A ray is incident on the face AB at an angle q (shown in the figure). Total internal reflection takes place at point E on the face BC .
The q must satisfy :
(A)θ>sin−1μ2μ1
(B)θ>sin−1μ12μ22−1
(C)θ<sin−1μ2μ1
(D)θ<sin−1μ12μ22−1✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Light entering face AB refracts according to μ1sinθ=μ2sinr. At E on the perpendicular face BC the angle of incidence is 90∘−r, and total internal reflection needs this to exceed the critical angle C, where sinC=μ2μ1. So 90∘−r>C, that is sinr<cosC=1−μ22μ12. Replacing sinr=μ2μ1sinθ gives μ2μ1sinθ<μ2μ22−μ12, so sinθ<μ12μ22−1 and therefore θ<sin−1μ12μ22−1.
